Un petit village polonais, sous l'occupation allemande durant la Deuxième guerre mondiale. Barbara et Jan, jeunes mariés, tentent désespérément d'avoir un enfant. Un jour, Jan rentre à la maison avec Regina, une jeune juive. Ils décident de la cacher. Le temps passe, puis Regina tombe enceinte de JanÉÉ Une place déserte, un quidam en costume d'opérette, un drapeau nazi, de vagues restes sur une nappe que le quidam dispute à un chien et un peintre, avec son attirail, qui traverse l'écranÉ Les plans, tour à tour rapprochés ou larges, se suivent en un savant enchaînement. En trois minutes, Jan Jakub Kolski pose d'emblée l'enjeu de son intrigue et démontre son talent de cinéaste. Il crée une intimité avec le spectateur qui fait qu'il peut se passer de commentaires autres que ce qui est montré. Il pratique la litote et l'ellipse avec une science certaine de la délicatesse: la douleur se lit sur les visages (celui de Barbara, par exemple, qui n'accepte pas sa stérilité); une tache de sang sur un mur, des souillures sur le sol à côté d'une étoile jaune, on demande à Jan d'effacer les traces. A elle seule, cette scène suffit à évoquer l'innommable. Si le cinéma est un art, Jan Jakub Kolski est alors un grand artiste.

The story takes place in a little Polish village during the German occupation. Newlyweds, Jan and Barbara, are desperately trying for a baby. One day Jan comes home with Regina, a young Jewish girl. The couple decide to hide her, but before long, Regina is expecting Jan's childÉ The screen is filled with a deserted square, an individual wearing a costume from the light opera, a Nazi flag, some scraps left on a tablecloth that the individual fights over with a dog and an artistÉ Shot ably follows shot, and in just three minutes, Jan Jakub Kolski introduces his story and his talent as a filmmaker. He creates a relationship with the spectator that needs no more commentary than the images he is showing. He tactfully practises understatement. Pain can be seen on the faces of his characters (on Barbara's, for example, who is unable to accept her sterility); a spot of blood on a wall, stains on the floor, next to a yellow star, we ask Jan to cover all the traces. This scene alone is enough to conjure up the unspeakable. If cinema is an art, then Jan Jakub Kolski is a great artist.

Né en 1956 à Wroclaw, Jan Jakub Kolski a étudié au Département Cinéma de l'Académie d'Etat du Film, de la Télévision et du Théâtre de Lodz. De 1976 à 1981, il a travaillé comme caméraman à la télévision de Wroclaw. Depuis 1982, il a réalisé plus d'une vingtaine de courts métrages. Avec son dernier film, Jan Jakub Kolski a remporté le Grand Prix Golden Lions au XXIIIe Festival du Film de Fiction Polonais à Gdynia, en octobre 1998, avant de partager le Grand Prix de Cinéma Tout Ecran 1999, avec le Beau travail de Claire Denis.

Born in 1956 in Wroclaw, Jan Jakub Kolski studied in the Cinema Department of the State Academy of Film, Television and Theatre of Lodz. From 1976 to 1981, he worked as a television cameraman in Wroclaw. Since 1982, he has made over twenty short films. With his last film, Jan Jakub Kolski won the Golden Lions Grand Prize at the XXIIIrd Polish Fiction Film Festival in Gdynia, in October 1998, before sharing the most important award at Cinema tout Ecran 1999, with Claire Denis 's Beau travail.
