Bess vit dans une petite communauté en Ecosse. Elle tombe amoureuse de Jan, qui travaille sur une plate-forme pétrolière. Tous deux se marient, malgré la désapprobation de leur entourage. Juste après, Jan retourne au labeur sur sa plate-forme, pendant que son épouse compte les jours jusqu'à son retour, persuadée que les dieux les protègent. Mais un jour, son mari a un accident et reste paralysé...

Bess lives in a small community in Scotland. She falls in love with Jan who works on an off-shore oil rig. They get married despite the disapproval of their family and friends. Straight away, Jan goes back to work on his off-shore oil rig, while his wife counts the days until her husband comes back. She is convinced that God will protect them both. But one day, her husband has an accident and is permanently paralyzed.
