Fried Adelphi, moine chartreux reclus dans le silence et la méditation depuis 25 ans, se confesse à New York. Il raconte son histoire : il a été chargé par ses frères de quitter l'Indonésie pour prolonger le bail à la ferme de son couvent en Suisse. Dans l'avion, il a une crise de claustrophobie et débarque à New Delhi. Il constate que son argent et ses papiers ont disparu. La jeune femme qui les lui a volés les retrouve par hasard et tous deux lient conaissance. Elle lui apprend qu'elle souffre d'une maladie incurable et se décide à accompagner le moine dans sa quête...
Fried Adelphi, a Chartusian monk who has maintained a vow of silence and meditation for the last twenty-five years, goes to confession in New York. He tells his story: He was sent by his brother to come back from Indonesia to extend the lease on a farm owned by his monastery in Switzerland. In the airplane, he has an attack of claustrophobia and gets off the plane in New Delhi. He discovers that his money and papers are missing. The young woman who has stolen them bumps into him by coincidence and they get to know each other. She tells him that she's suffering from an incurable disease. She decides to accompany the monk on his quest.
